Monday, June 16, 2025

Hurricane season officially began June 1 and runs through November 30. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the 2025 season is expected to be more active than normal, making early preparedness essential for safety. Harnett County Emergency Management has released a new video with essential hurricane preparedness tips—including what to pack in your emergency kit, how to stay informed during a storm, and how to use the Situational Awareness Dashboard in the event of an emergency.  The community is encourage to watch this brief education video on our YouTube channel here to prepare for hurricane season or watch above.

NOAA predicts 6-10 hurricanes this season, including 3-5 major hurricanes - those classified as Category 3, 4, or 5. Staying informed and ready can make a critical difference.

Harnett County Emergency Management (EM) will keep citizens informed during emergencies through Harnett RAVE Alerts. This opt-in service alerts subscribers of severe weather and other emergency updates. The County encourages residents to sign up on the Harnett County Emergency Management website. Only subscribers will receive communications.

“Harnett RAVE allows us to prepare for and notify the public in emergencies,” said Zach Shean, Harnett County Emergency Management Coordinator. “This reaches you through wireless emergency alerts or IPAWS notifications that go out to our community or residents that signed up or opted in to our Harnett RAVE.”

Steps to get prepared

Harnett County EM urges residents to prepare an emergency supply kit that includes 72 hours of non-perishable food and water, a flashlight and batteries, medications, and more. A full recommended list can be found on the Harnett County EM website.

If evacuation is necessary, it is crucial to know where to go. ReadyNC.gov offers evacuation route maps and shelter information for each area of the state.

In the event of an emergency, it is also important to know how to contact loved ones. It is recommended to create contact cards for each family member, identifying an out-of-state contact in case local calls are impossible, and labeling an emergency contact in each person’s phone.

As hurricane season begins, Harnett County Emergency Management remains committed to ensuring residents are informed and prepared.

Harnett County also encourages residents to follow the Harnett County Government and Harnett County Emergency Services on social media (Facebook, Instagram, X) to stay connected as other channels to receive important information.
