Veterans in suicidal crisis can go to any VA or non-VA health care facility for free emergency health care

New VA Benefit: Free Emergency Suicide Care
Starting Jan. 17, Veterans in acute suicidal crisis can receive free emergency health care at any VA or non-VA facility — including up to 30 days of inpatient/residential care and up to 90 days of outpatient care.

  • No VA enrollment required.

  • Coverage includes emergency care, transportation, and follow-up support.

  • Eligible Veterans include those with qualifying service, combat operations, or survivors of military sexual trauma.

This expansion under the COMPACT Act of 2020 will provide life-saving care to millions of Veterans, reinforcing VA’s top priority: preventing Veteran suicide.

Veterans in crisis can dial 988 and press 1 for immediate support.
