What Is Measles?

Measles is a very contagious disease, but it can be prevented with a vaccine. It spreads through the air and by close contact with someone who is sick. The virus can stay in the air for up to two hours after a person leaves the area.

What to Know About Measles:

  • Measles is more than a rash or fever. It can cause serious health problems.
  • Measles spreads very easily. If one person has measles, 9 out of 10 people nearby can get it if they are not protected.
  • The best way to stay safe is the MMR vaccine. The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. It give strong, long-lasting protection. Talk to your healthcare provider about the MMR vaccine, especially if planning to travel.
The Harnett County Health Department provides the MMR vaccines for adults and children.
