On October 8, 2019, Harnett County Fire Marshal's Office witnessed Fire Prevention Week Success. Shortly after noon, a fire broke out near Angier, NC in Northwest Harnett County. Taylor, a five year old pre-schooler, noticed smoke coming from a carport laundry room after an electrical fire broke out. Taylor immediately and calmly ran inside her home and alerted her grandmother of the fire. Taylor and her grandmother were able to escape, swiftly notify 9-1-1 dispatchers, and receive a response from local fire departments without delay.
Angier-Black River Fire Department, with aid from Buies Creek and Northwest Harnett Fire Departments quickly responded and were able to minimize loss of property during skilled suppression efforts. As Fire Marshal Rodney Daniels mentioned earlier this week in a release regarding Fire Prevention Week, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” Taylor and her grandmother had planned their escape and were able to follow through with their escape to safety.
The actions outlined above exemplify a real example emphasizing the importance of educating citizens about fire safety in Harnett County. Thank you to all involved in the previous education, yesterday’s response, and thank you Taylor!
