Harnett County officials are asking the public to stay away from the former Boone Trail High School at 8500 Old U.S. 421, Lillington, after it was destroyed by a fire last night. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the gymnasium and media center, however the two-story building was a total loss. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The Harnett County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
The former Boone Trail High School was built in 1928 and was vacated in 2010 when the new Boone Trail Elementary School opened. In 2017, the County opened the Boone Trail Community Center & Library in the media center and gymnasium. The County was in the process of engaging Preservation NC to market the vacant portions of the property for redevelopment.
Officials with Harnett County Emergency Services are asking the public to stay away from the former school, as the remaining structure is at risk of collapsing and poses a significant safety risk. Operations of the Boone Trail Community Center & Library have been suspended until County officials can fully assess the situation. Updates will be provided via social media, on the County website at www.harnett.org and through local news media.
