NCDEQ to Hold Public Meeting Oct. 24 for Dunn-Erwin Landfill Expansion

Public Comment Period Ongoing Through November 26

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Waste Management, Solid Waste Section, will hold a public meeting regarding Harnett County’s application for a permit for the on-site expansion of the Dunn-Erwin Landfill at 449 Daniels Road, Dunn, on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. The permit will allow for the landfill’s expansion to a separate 19.3-acre disposal area within the existing landfill property boundaries adjacent to the current landfill.

The proposed expansion would extend the life of the landfill approximately 34 years. The total landfill property area would remain unchanged at approximately 325 acres. The Dunn-Erwin Landfill is permitted to dispose of construction and demolition (C&D) debris, inert debris, land clearing debris, and asphalt.

The public meeting will be held in the Town of Lillington Board Meeting Room at 102 East Front Street, Lillington. Interested parties may submit oral or written statements and data concerning the proposed new facility permit. Anyone wishing to speak may register at the meeting and will be given five minutes to present their comments. Representatives from Harnett County Solid Waste will be present to answer questions.

Interested parties may also submit written statements and data concerning the permit during a required 45-day comment period, which began on October 9 and will end November 26 at 5 p.m. Comments concerning the terms and conditions of the proposed permit should be submitted in writing to Benjamin Jackson, Division Contact before the close of the comment period. Comments may be submitted by mail to NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Division of Waste Management, Solid Waste Section, 1646 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1646. For more information, contact (919) 508-8400 or email benjamin.jackson@ncdenr.gov.

After the close of the public comment period and after consideration of all comments, the Solid Waste Section will issue a permit decision.
